Juan de Dios Magdaleno was born in Colima, Mexico in 1984.
Since the age of 10 he's been active in music, initially through his Mexican folk heritage. In Mexico, he studied violin with Tatiana Zatina and Alessandro Orsso and composition with Anatoly Zatin and Luis Jaime Cortez; in parallel he realized architectural and actuarial science studies.
In 2009 he completed his Bachelors Degree in Composition at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the tuition of Fabio Nieder and Richard Ayres. In 2014, Juan de Dios completed with honors a Master’s Degree in Composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz under the guidance of Pierluigi Billone and Gerd Kühr. During 2014 – 2015 Juan realized postgraduate studies under the guidance of Beat Furrer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria.
Throughout his musical studies Juan has taken part in composition workshops and lectures with Helmut Lachenmann, Brian Ferneyhough, Chaya Czernowin, Tristan Murail, Isabel Mundry, James Dillon, Jonathan Harvey, Salvatore Sciarrino, Marco Stroppa, Michael Jarrell, Oscar Bianchi, Ivan Fedele, Julio Estrada, George Benjamin, among others.
He has been honored by receiving some awards and fellowships for his creative work such as: "The Delta Scholarship" (Dutch Ministry of Education), “Jovenes Creadores” Fellowship by the CONACULTA/FONCA (National Council for Culture and Arts of Mexico), 1st prize at the International Composition Competition “Lutoslawski Award 2008” in Poland, 2nd prize at the "Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition 2010" held in Vienna, the “Musikfoerderungpreis der Stadt Graz 2013”, “Premi Joan Guinjoan 2013”, the "Franz Schubert und Musik der Moderne International Composition Competition 2014", and the “Ö1 Talentebörse Composition prize 2014”.
His music has been played in Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, Poland, England, USA, Italy, Spain, France, Finland and Austria by ensembles and musicians such as: Ensemble Intercontemporain, Arditti Quartet, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Asko|Schoenberg Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Namascae Lemanic Modern Ensemble, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Nouvel Ensemble Modern, Ossia Ensemble, Orquesta de Camara de Bellas Artes, Jos Zwaanenburg, Juan Miguel Amador and Ernesto Molinari.
During 2015-2016 Juan de Dios took part of the CURSUS 1 at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique) and was a resident at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France.
Juan lives in Helsinki, Finland.
